Hiring conversations

From an employer conversation to an interview: what to say and what to check

An employer replied. Nice. You do not need a speech, a sales funnel or twelve follow-up messages. You need a clear next step and a few sensible questions.

Begin with the role and a useful detail

Reference the opportunity and one relevant piece of experience. Ask a focused question about responsibilities, working arrangements or the next step. Keep the first message easy to answer.

In LaunchHire connections, mutual interest opens the conversation. Expressing interest does not automatically submit an application or share your resume. If the employer needs a formal application, ask and use the normal application route.

Explain a gap without writing yourself off

If you have adjacent experience rather than the exact skill, explain the connection and the limit. Be direct about what you have not done. A practical example is more useful than a confident promise to learn everything by Monday.

Prepare a short account of a relevant task, your contribution and the outcome. Your resume report can give you questions to practise, but it cannot predict the conversation.

  • Know which role you are discussing.
  • Prepare one concrete example.
  • Ask what the next step involves.
  • Do not share passwords, payment details or confidential work.

Before

Hi, any job? Please check my profile.

Clearer

I am interested in the support role. I have handled billing queries and written troubleshooting notes for colleagues. Is the next step an application or a short conversation?

Adapt the wording to your real experience and the specific role.

Read status updates for what they actually mean

Shortlisted and Interviewing describe progress, not a guaranteed job. Selected is an employer update in the conversation, not a substitute for a written offer with clear terms.

LaunchHire keeps conversation hiring updates separate from normal application statuses. If you used both routes, check the relevant record rather than assuming a change in one automatically changes the other.

Stay reachable without living in your inbox

Keep your contact information current and check Notifications for replies and hiring updates. Opening the relevant conversation marks its alerts read. Email reminder preferences are available on the Notifications page.

Before accepting anything, confirm the role, pay, working arrangements and agreed terms directly with the employer. Never pay someone to receive an interview or disclose sensitive documents before you understand who is requesting them and why.

Keep the useful bits coming.
